Soy del tiempo que se fue, con la canción,
que en Buenos Aires se oía
en la guitarra cantar, con emoción,
"Pobre mi madre querida";
cuando el mate iba y venía
detrás del pan de cremona
y era sentir un placer, pasar así,
más de un atardecer.
Aprendí del pasado a ser quien soy,
a dejar un recuerdo donde voy
y a saber que un buen amigo en la vida
vale más que lo que pueda tener;
y ayudar sin que me rindan honor
al que a mi venga a pedirme un favor.
(Instrumental)
I belong to a time gone by, marked by a song
that once rang out in Buenos Aires,
sung with deep emotion to the strum of a guitar:
"My Poor, Beloved Mother."
The days when the mate passed from hand to hand
alongside slices of cremona bread—
and it was a true pleasure to spend
more than one afternoon just so.
From the past, I learned to be who I am today:
to leave a fond memory wherever I go,
and to know that, in this life, a true friend
is worth more than anything I might possess;
and to offer my help, seeking no honor
to anyone who comes asking for a favor.
(Instrumental)
Note: pan de cremona (cremona bread) is a flaky pastry originated in the city of Cremona in Italy and brought to Argentina by Italian immigrant. It's often eaten to accompany mate as a snack.
